AI interest is moving outside the major

The enrollment decline does not mean students have stopped caring about computing. It signals a change in what they think is valuable. The AP found universities adding AI majors, minors, and certificates while making machine-learning and coding courses easier for nonmajors to enter. Students increasingly want enough technical fluency to apply AI inside another field rather than betting their entire degree on a traditional software path.

That shift could produce stronger hybrid talent: psychologists who understand workplace automation, musicians who can interrogate generative tools, and scientists who can build with data. It could also produce superficial fluency if prompt-driven output substitutes for the concepts students need to evaluate what the model did.

Teach leverage without erasing foundations

AI-assisted coding lowers the first barrier to experimentation. It can also perform the task decomposition and debugging through which beginners traditionally learn. Programs need assessments that reveal whether a student can explain the code, detect a bad assumption, and adapt the method when the tool fails.

The durable skill is not memorizing syntax or blindly accepting generated output. It is combining domain judgment with enough computational understanding to know what to ask, what to verify, and when not to automate.
