Mixed evidence
Trace a conditional liquidity channel across stockholders, open-ended funds, bonds and lenders while separating exposures from losses and prices from cash flows.
- Fund investors seeking redemptions and the investors who remain
- Borrowers refinancing debt even outside the AI sector
- The remarks do not identify a failing fund or set a probability for a crash.
- Loan balances cannot establish loss severity without defaults, recoveries and offsets.
- Sales of liquid assets can transmit pressure to borrowers outside the original trade.
- A fund with liquidity buffers may absorb withdrawals without forcing other institutions to cut credit.
A balance sheet is not a loss statement
The euro-area loan estimate describes a stock of claims. Most or all can still be repaid. Conversely, a small direct holding does not capture everything if other investors hold similar assets and sell at the same time. Ask about funding, liquidity and connections as well as the size of the original position.
The evidence worth watching next
A falling share price alone would be weak evidence of contagion. More persuasive evidence would combine withdrawals, identifiable asset sales and tighter credit under comparable conditions. Bond prices can also move with interest rates for reasons unrelated to AI. The ECB lists November 18 for the next Financial Stability Review; these remarks are not that review.
