A barred politician’s AI avatar is testing Brazil’s election rules

Why it matters

The avatar reportedly identified itself as AI-generated, so the immediate issue is not simply whether viewers were deceived. It is whether a synthetic likeness can perform the political function of a person whom a court has prohibited from public political communication. That question shifts election-integrity policy from detecting fakes to governing authorized digital surrogates.

Courts and election authorities will need rules that distinguish parody, archival footage, endorsements, and active synthetic representation. Effective governance also requires provenance records, clear responsibility for the campaign and model operator, fast but reviewable enforcement, and public archives that preserve what voters actually saw.
