Tutoring efficiency is not the whole job of teaching
The model's appeal is clear: compress routine instruction, pay adults to focus on motivation and projects, and give students more time for practical skills. But teaching also includes diagnosing misconceptions, responding to emotional and developmental needs, building a classroom community, adapting explanations, and recognizing when a student appears productive while learning the wrong thing.
Axios notes that research on children's cognitive effects remains limited and that only 18% of public K–12 teachers in a recent Gallup study reported receiving formal guidance on AI. Alpha's growth may produce valuable evidence, but families and policymakers need outcome data that is independent, longitudinal, disaggregated, and comparable with schools serving different populations.
