Peer-reviewed research
Follow the translation chain from retrospective association to machine-assisted measurement, mechanistic experiment and still-missing human intervention trial.
- Patients who may mistake a research lead for current medical advice
- Clinicians and researchers designing prospective studies
- Retrospective cancer-center data cannot establish causation or broad population generalizability
- No prospective trial has shown losartan improves the newly associated outcomes through brown-fat activation in humans
- Reusable AI phenotyping tools could uncover more candidate mechanisms from existing scans
- Premature treatment headlines could encourage self-medication or weaken trust if trials fail
What AI measured
The team analyzed 101,243 patient records and semi-automatically quantified brown-fat activity in about 8,700. The observational associations can direct research but cannot establish that brown fat caused better outcomes.
Where the drug lead stops
Losartan activated brown-fat cells and increased energy expenditure in mice. Whether it can safely change clinically important outcomes in humans for this purpose remains unknown.
