Politico reports that Meta's chief executive opposed a proposed national AI regulator during a private call with President Trump, arguing that a FINRA-style organization could be flawed and vulnerable to capture. The proposal reportedly envisioned an independent body with government oversight and industry membership or funding.
The account relies on people familiar with a call that has no public transcript. A second source told Politico that the executive did not ask the president to change his position.
Structure matters more than the label
A single national body could reduce fragmented state rules and build concentrated technical expertise. An industry-funded structure could also let dominant firms shape membership, standards, evidence access, and enforcement against smaller competitors.
The public test should be concrete: who appoints leaders, who pays, what records are disclosed, whether civil society and affected groups hold seats, which powers are statutory, and how decisions can be appealed. Without those answers, both coordination and capture remain plausible.
