The model raises spatial and temporal resolution
Google says WeatherNext 3 combines live geostationary satellite imagery with sparse weather-station observations and refreshes forecasts every hour. It reports surface temperature and moisture at up to five-kilometer resolution, other surface variables at ten kilometers, and atmospheric variables at 25 kilometers.
Compared with WeatherNext 2's 25-kilometer, six-hour output, the system is designed to capture finer local structure and update faster as storms and conditions evolve.
Operational value depends on difficult cases
Google reports substantial early-lead improvements in probabilistic precipitation scores and says longer forecasts can be up to 50 percent more accurate, with larger gains where past forecasting was weaker. The model also adds renewable-energy variables, including wind speed at 100 meters and measures of cloud and solar radiation.
Those are company claims supported by linked evaluations, not a substitute for local verification. Emergency decisions should still follow official meteorological agencies while independent users test extremes, regional calibration, false alarms, and downstream decision value.
