The study tested whether Amazon Alexa for Shopping and Walmart Sparky could identify a product’s country of origin and flag listings where a “Made in USA” claim appeared to conflict with other origin information. The researchers say both systems showed the technical ability to detect the problem, but that shoppers could still be denied or diverted from the relevant evidence.
As agents move between consumers and marketplaces, old protections need a new interface. Platforms should document which product fields an agent can access, explain when it withholds an answer, separate advertising incentives from factual responses, preserve query and correction records, and give regulators enough access to test whether equivalent questions receive consistent treatment.
