The asset is the ecosystem position

Hugging Face is more than a code host. It is a discovery layer, distribution channel, collaboration space, dataset repository, evaluation surface, and route to compute for a wide range of developers.

That position helps explain why strategic value can exceed current revenue. It also means ownership choices can influence which models are visible, easy to run, financed, moderated, and optimized for particular hardware.

Open access needs enforceable independence

Promises to preserve openness should be translated into measurable commitments: portable models and data, documented ranking systems, equal access for competing hardware, transparent moderation, and durable community participation.

Regulators should examine the vertical relationship between chips, cloud capacity, software tooling, model distribution, and developer lock-in. The relevant competition question is control of the pathway, not only the purchase price.
