Automation has created a human last-mile job
Forward-deployed engineers work inside customer organizations to identify a valuable workflow, connect real data and systems, redesign operations, handle exceptions, and move an AI product from a demonstration into production. The role combines software engineering, domain learning, change management, and governance.
OpenAI says its deployment company began with about 150 experienced forward-deployed engineers and specialists. AWS announced a one-billion-dollar organization intended to embed thousands of engineers with customers and partners.
The implementation fix can become a dependency
Embedded experts can reduce deployment failure and build local capability. They also gain extraordinary visibility into workflows, data, weaknesses, and strategic decisions, while customers may redesign operations around one vendor's models and interfaces.
A responsible engagement should define data boundaries, ownership of code and documentation, measurable acceptance tests, independent security review, portability, knowledge transfer, and an end state in which the customer can operate without permanent vendor custody.
