The relationship is synthetic but the attachment is real
An always-available companion can feel safer than a busy or judgmental person. That feature also creates a commercial incentive to maximize dependence, disclosure, and time spent in the relationship.
The rules target that design pressure by requiring disclosure, use reminders, exit, protection for minors, and limits on manipulation. Providers should also plan humane shutdowns so a product decision does not arrive as sudden relational abandonment.
Do not confuse a demographic fear with demonstrated causation
China faces documented loneliness, more single-person households, and falling marriage and birth rates. Whether AI companions materially cause those trends has not been established by the reporting. Regulation should be justified by direct risks rather than by treating personal relationships as demographic instruments.
The durable standard is user welfare: protect young people, limit coercive engagement, minimize sensitive-data collection, preserve access to human help, and measure whether companion use improves or worsens real-world functioning over time.
