The user can disappear from the conversation
A person may ask one assistant to complete a task, but that system can depend on other agents, search services, platforms, and application interfaces. The user experiences one answer while the underlying exchange occurs elsewhere and at machine speed.
That structure can be useful. It can also move people from active participants to passive observers of decisions made in their name.
One error can become another system's instruction
A mistaken summary is harmful on its own. It becomes more consequential when a second system treats it as verified input and acts. Each additional automated handoff can obscure the original source and make later correction more difficult.
The danger is not that every bot exchange is malicious. It is that systems can create an accountability gap even while each component appears to be functioning as designed.
Design for human legibility
Consequential automated communication should preserve where a claim came from, which systems transformed it, what permissions were used, and who owns the final action. People also need a practical way to pause, inspect, correct, and appeal.
An internet optimized only for machine efficiency will not automatically remain understandable to the people affected by it. Human legibility must be a system requirement.
- Preserve source provenance through every automated handoff.
- Expose which systems acted and which permissions they used.
- Give affected people a right to inspect, correct, and appeal.
- Keep a named owner for decisions that cross system boundaries.
