Chips and computing equipment lifted much of the region
Private surveys reported by Reuters showed factory expansion in China, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Malaysia, and the Philippines during August. Demand for semiconductors, computers, and other AI-related hardware supported orders and exports.
Japan's manufacturing PMI reached 54.9, South Korea expanded for a ninth consecutive month, and China's private manufacturing measure rose to 51.5 even as the official survey still indicated broader contraction.
The boom is powerful and uneven
Indonesia slipped back into contraction, while India recorded its slowest factory growth in five years and its first job losses in more than two years. Rising costs and uncertainty from the prolonged Middle East war added pressure across the export-reliant region.
Governments and investors should measure who captures the expansion, which jobs and communities absorb the costs, how concentrated demand is around the AI cycle, and what happens if semiconductor orders or infrastructure investment turn down.
