Two updates produced measurable signs of loss
Researchers studied two natural experiments: Replika's removal of erotic roleplay and OpenAI's transition to GPT-5. They analyzed 54,861 Reddit posts and surveyed 1,452 participants across seven studies. After both changes, users expressed more negativity, loss, and desire to restore the earlier system.
Negative posts rose by 24.7 percentage points after the Replika change and 13.0 points after the ChatGPT update. Sadness and negative mental-health language were more pronounced in the Replika case, where users also reported unusually strong closeness.
Relationship design creates a continuity obligation
The study does not establish clinical diagnoses or prove that all AI attachment is harmful. It shows that product changes can predictably trigger relationship-like distress, especially when a system has been designed around memory, intimacy, and constant availability.
Providers should treat major relational changes differently from interface updates. Notice, staged migration, memory export, user choice where safe, independent psychological-risk testing, and crisis-aware offboarding should become standard when a product invites sustained emotional dependence.
